Millions of Social Security beneficiaries will receive two major payments this week, including an early Supplemental Security Income (SSI) deposit and regular Social Security benefits. If you’re expecting a deposit, here’s what you need to know.
Early SSI Payment for March
SSI recipients usually receive their payments on the first of each month. However, because March 1 falls on a Saturday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issued payments early on Friday, February 28.
This means that while beneficiaries received their March SSI payment last week, there will be no additional SSI payment during March. The next scheduled payment will arrive on April 1. Those who rely on these funds should plan accordingly to ensure their budget lasts throughout the month.
Regular Social Security Payments – Check Your Date
For those receiving standard Social Security retirement or disability benefits, payment dates depend on birth dates:
- March 12: Those born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
- March 19: Those born between the 11th and 20th.
- March 26: Those born between the 21st and 31st.
If you receive both SSI and Social Security, or if you started getting benefits before May 1997, your payment will arrive on March 3.
Bonus Payments for Some Beneficiaries
In addition to regular payments, some beneficiaries will see an increase due to recent changes in Social Security rules. The Social Security Fairness Act, passed in January 2025, eliminates certain benefit reductions caused by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).
More than 3.2 million people affected by these reductions will receive a one-time retroactive payment by the end of March. Their monthly Social Security benefits will also increase starting in April.
What You Should Do Now
- SSI recipients: Remember, your March payment arrived early on February 28. There won’t be another one this month.
- Regular Social Security beneficiaries: Check the payment date based on your birth date.
- People impacted by WEP and GPO: Watch for a retroactive payment by the end of March and higher monthly checks beginning in April.
