The proposal may offer households $393 each month per child in place of a tax credit

A new plan would bring back the monthly routine of giving families checks.

Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Jesus Garcia of Illinois presented the End Child Poverty Act this recent month. When a kid turns 18, the proposed legislation will create a universal profit that might benefit families with $393 each month.

“Congress must enact federal legislation to fight child poverty and assist millions of households in paying for necessities like food, housing, childcare, and medical care. According to Omar, the End Child Poverty Act would reduce it by about two-thirds.

The Child Tax Credit will be replaced by the scheme. The Child Tax Credit (CTC), which offers a benefit of up to $2,000 annually, was increased throughout the pandemic to $3,000 per kid aged 6 to 17 and $3,600 per child aged 5 and under, with the remaining half of that amount paid in monthly payments of up to $300. Yet, Congress is hesitant to make it official and permitted it to end at pre-pandemic levels without any monthly payments.

Children will be registered in the suggested scheme directly at birth, and there might be no earnings restrictions. The Social Security Administration might be responsible for distributing payments.

According to supporters, the payments, which amount to $4,700 year per child, will lead to a 64% decrease in child poverty.
