Residents in certain counties in Mississippi have been given a waiver by the Food and Nutrition Service

This decision was made following the extended power outages and property damage caused by the March Tornadoes. Until May 28, individuals in Carroll, Grenada, Holmes, Humphreys, Lee, Leflore, Lowndes, Monroe, Montgomery, Sharkey, Sunflower, Washington, and Yazoo counties who are part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program can use their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to buy hot foods, something that is typically not allowed by Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) rules.
This waiver recognizes that many residents have been displaced and are temporarily living in other areas, making it difficult to store or prepare food
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal nutrition assistance program that provides low-income individuals and families with assistance to purchase food. Normally, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) rules prohibit the use of EBT cards to buy hot foods or food prepared for immediate consumption.
This waiver is a temporary measure that aims to help those who have been affected by the tornadoes. The Food and Nutrition Service believes that this will ease some of the burdens on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in these counties who have been struggling to access food following the natural disaster.
