Two primary programs, ANCHOR and the Senior Freeze, are administered by the State, along with several programs overseen by Hopewell Township.
Efforts are underway in the state of New Jersey to enhance property tax relief for seniors, prompting inquiries from Hopewell Township residents regarding existing programs that assist senior citizens
The Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) program has replaced the previously known Homestead Benefit Program. ANCHOR offers property tax relief to New Jersey residents who own or rent a home and meet specific criteria, including income limits and the payment of property taxes. This program applies exclusively to one’s primary residence. If residents applied by last February, they should have already received their checks. Further information will be shared when next year’s program becomes available.
The Senior Freeze program aims to reimburse a portion of property tax increases. The application deadline for this program is October 31, 2023, and it applies to the 2022 taxes on one’s primary residence. To qualify, individuals must have been 65 years or older by December 31, 2021, or be receiving Social Security disability benefits. They must have been continuous New Jersey residents as renters or homeowners since the end of 2011 (not necessarily in the same home), and they should have owned and resided in their current home since the end of 2018.
Full payment of taxes for 2021 and 2022 is required, and income requirements must be met to participate in the program
Hopewell Township administers several other state programs, including a $250 tax reduction available to senior citizens, disabled residents, and veterans. Surviving spouses may also be eligible for these programs. Additionally, honorably discharged veterans who were 100% disabled during active duty service may qualify for a 100% property tax exemption, which could also extend to surviving spouses. Servicepersons deployed or mobilized for active service during wartime may be eligible to defer their taxes until their return, and they can designate someone to apply for this program on their behalf.
