The U.S. government is sending money to more than 37,000 people who were scammed of student loan debt relief

The Federal Trade Commission says that the Orange County company called Arete Financial Group scammed people looking for student loan debt relief into making advance payments.

The student loan debt relief company never assisted those students seeking debt relief, and the company pretended to be connected with the Department of Education.

The federal government will distribute more than $3 million in payments to the victims.

In 2019, the FTC gained a temporary restraining order to stop the operations of the alleged scam student loan debt relief company
