Legislation to restore the enhanced child tax credit and offer a $2,000 “baby bonus” for households with new babies has been proposed by three U.S. House Democrats.
In a wider proposal to revive the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, U.S. Representatives Ritchie Torres of New York, Suzan DelBene of Washington, and Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut added the incentive. The law provided an additional $250 every month for every eligible child between the ages of 6 and 17 and $300 each month for every eligible child under the age of 6.
Attempts to restart that program beyond its 2021 conclusion have been unsuccessful. The extended CTC could become permanent under the new bill introduced by DeLauro, DelBene, and Torres, as well as over 200 other supporters.
“Unprecedented financial stability for American families was delivered when we upgraded and enlarged the Child Tax Credit in 2021 as part of the American Rescue Plan. According to a news release from DeLauro on June 7, “It was the biggest tax relief for middle-class and employed households in generations.
