Instant Refunds for Overpaid Cook County Property Taxes

According to the Treasurer’s press release, property owners usually don’t need applications or papers for instant refunds. Money will be distributed without property owner involvement. In three months, qualified property owners will receive 48% of the reimbursements directly into their bank accounts.

Automatic return recipients paid more than necessary on their initial Cook County property tax payment. Treasurer Pappas believes property tax exemptions for Senior Citizens, Senior Freeze, and Disabled Persons may explain these overpayments.

Automatic refunds accept numerous payment methods. About 1,900 online property taxpayers will get $13.1 million in bank payments. Over $8 million in tax refund cheques will be sent to 4,000 bank or mortgage escrow account payers. The notification said 2,900 homes who paid taxes by cash or check will receive an electronic refund or refund application for accurate delivery.

The Treasurer’s office said many refunds will help Senior Citizen, Senior Freeze, and Disabled Persons homes achieve property tax exemptions. These exemptions decrease the Second Installment tax bill but not the First.

Property owners can check the Cook County Treasurer’s website for automatic refunds. Enter the home location or 14-digit Property Index Number in the purple “Your Property Tax Overview” box. The Treasurer’s office intends to simplify refund distribution for Cook County taxpayers who may benefit.
