The Montana Department of Revenue promised a $2,500 tax rebate for Montana citizens by December. The July distribution of direct payments is slated to end on December 31. Residents had to file their 2021 tax forms to receive the reimbursement, which varied by condition.
Eligibility Criteria and Maximum Refund Amounts Revealed
Residents must be residents for the whole 2021 tax year, file 2020 and 2021 forms on schedule, and not be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax form. Ineligible were those with a figure greater than zero on line 20 of the 2021 return.
The maximum refund for married joint filers is $2,500; individual filers can receive $1,250. Please note that these are the maximum refund amounts, and the actual reimbursement will depend on filing status or line 20 of the tax form, whichever is less.
Governor Gianforte explained the rebate’s purpose: “Montanans overpaid taxes, therefore we’re refunding them. I’m excited to return this money to Montanans.” By year’s end, eligible taxpayers should get the rebate without additional steps.

Montana Tax Rebate Distribution
Montana Department of Revenue Director Brendan Beatty stressed the necessity of efficiently administering rebates to qualified taxpayers. He advised recipients to check bank statements or mail for rebates. The plan seeks to compensate overcharged taxpayers, according to the Governor.
Montana taxpayers are on track to get tax rebates of up to $2,500, with distribution beginning in July and ending on December 31. Filing 2021 taxes and meeting residency and dependent requirements are required. The rebates will automatically be sent to qualified recipients to offset overpayment taxes.
