The IRS has confirmed that the 2024 tax season will begin on January 29, 2024. IRS prepares for a hectic season with 128.7 million individual tax forms due April 15. Software providers and tax specialists accept electronic submissions and keep them until the IRS processes them in January, allowing taxpayers to start working on their taxes earlier.
IRS Unveils Exciting Tools
Before filing season begins, taxpayers can use IRS Free File on the IRS website starting January 12. The IRS Direct File pilot, a new tool, will be gradually introduced to eligible taxpayers in participating states by mid-March after final testing. Building on the success of the 2023 tax season and the Inflation Reduction Act, these initiatives aim to improve taxpayer services.
IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel underscores the agency’s commitment to improving operations and simplifying tax preparation and filing. The 2024 tax season saw the expansion of Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) in-person services, extended hours at many TACs, and reduced wait times on the toll-free line.
The popular ‘Where’s My Refund?’ feature will also be improved to give taxpayers more detailed and mobile-optimized refund status updates. Taxpayers can now send correspondence, non-tax forms, and notification responses online, a major step toward paperless processing. This innovation should enable 125 million paper document submissions annually.

The IRS is also adding chat, scheduling and canceling payments, updating payment plans, and validating and storing bank accounts to the Individual Online Account. Finally, a new trial tax filing service dubbed Direct File will allow eligible people to file their 2023 federal tax returns online with the IRS for free.
The start of the 2024 tax season brings tax filings and the promise of IRS improvements and new tools. These changes should make tax filing easier and less stressful for millions of Americans.
