Michael Wells, who had been serving as the interim head since December, now steps into the role on a permanent basis, reflecting his vast experience and accomplishments.
In a significant development, Gov. Tina Kotek made an announcement on Wednesday confirming Michael Wells as the permanent director of the Oregon Lottery, pending the essential state Senate approval.
Before his current position, Michael Wells had undertaken critical roles within the organization. He previously held the post of assistant director for security and was also responsible for managing the lottery’s cybercrime division. As the chief, Michael Wells also serves as the secretary and executive officer of the Oregon Lottery Commission, a board comprising five members appointed by the governor. This commission plays a pivotal role in overseeing the lottery, ensuring its proper administration and effective management.
The Oregon Lottery, a significant revenue contributor to the state since its inception in 1984, continues to be a vital component of the state’s financial landscape. According to a recent news release, it contributed approximately $900 million to the state’s coffers during the last fiscal year, with players receiving about $16 billion in prizes from a diverse range of offerings, including Powerball, Megabucks, and various video games.
Moreover, with nearly 450 employees, the self-funded lottery plays a critical role in funding essential sectors such as state parks, public schools, veteran services, Outdoor School programs, and economic development initiatives.

Michael Wells, whose annual earnings stand at approximately $270,900, brings to his role extensive experience garnered from over 24 years of service in local, state, and federal law enforcement. His expertise in computer intrusion investigations, demonstrated during his tenure with the Oregon Department of Justice and the FBI‘s Cyber Crime Task Force, makes him a well-suited leader for the Oregon Lottery.
Michael Wells, a respected figure in law enforcement and cybersecurity circles, expressed his gratitude for Gov. Kotek‘s trust in his leadership. He is dedicated to furthering the Oregon Lottery’s mission of funding vital programs that benefit the people of Oregon.
