Millions of Americans received financial relief in recent years through the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) and the $1,400 stimulus checks. But did you know that some people may still be eligible to claim these payments? If you missed out, you might have another chance to get the money owed to you.
$3,600 Child Tax Credit (CTC): Who Qualifies?
The American Rescue Plan temporarily expanded the Child Tax Credit in 2021, increasing the amount to:
- $3,600 per child under age six
- $3,000 per child aged 6 to 17
Unlike previous years, the credit was fully refundable, meaning families with low or no income could still receive the full amount. To qualify for the maximum benefit, your income had to be:
- $75,000 or less for single filers
- $112,500 or less for heads of household
- $150,000 or less for married couples filing jointly
If you didn’t claim the full credit, you may still be able to file an amended tax return or claim any missing funds.
What About the $1,400 Stimulus Check?
The third round of stimulus checks was part of the American Rescue Plan, providing $1,400 payments to eligible individuals and an extra $1,400 per dependent.
To receive the full amount, you had to earn:
- $75,000 or less as a single filer
- $112,500 or less as head of household
- $150,000 or less for married couples filing jointly
Payments phased out completely at $80,000 for individuals, $120,000 for heads of household, and $160,000 for couples.
If you didn’t receive this stimulus check or got less than expected, you may still be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit by filing a 2021 tax return.
IRS is Sending Automatic Payments—Are You on the List?
In December 2024, the IRS announced that nearly one million taxpayers are set to receive automatic payments in early 2025. These payments—up to $1,400 per person—are for those who were eligible but never claimed their money.
If you think you’re owed money, check your 2021 tax return and make sure you filed correctly. Those who never filed may still have time to claim their payments.
