Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) free tax filing system for tax returns will harm marginalized communities, including blacks and low-income taxpayers.
New Free Tax Filing System for Tax Returns Will Negatively Impact Marginalized Communities Subjected to Unfair Audits
Several members of marginalized communities, including low-income taxpayers and Blacks, will be negatively affected by launching the new free tax filing system for tax returns called “Direct File.”
Despite the good intentions of providing free services to several taxpayers, the free tax filing system will harm and negatively impact Black taxpayers, who have been subjected to unfair audits and receiving higher audits than other taxpayers from various races.
Several low-income families, who are suffering from financial strains, will also expect negative impacts from the free tax filing system as they reportedly received five times more audits than other individuals filing their taxes.
