IRS Extends 2025 Tax Deadlines for Disaster Victims – Are You Eligible?

As tax season approaches, the IRS has announced special deadline extensions for individuals and businesses affected by natural disasters. If you live in an area hit by severe storms, wildfires, or other federally declared disasters, you may have extra time to file your 2025 taxes and make payments.

New Tax Deadlines for Disaster Victims

For most taxpayers, the deadline to file their federal tax returns remains April 15, 2025. However, the IRS has automatically extended the deadline for people in certain disaster-affected states. This means eligible taxpayers won’t need to file or pay until the new dates assigned by the IRS.

States with a May 1, 2025, Deadline:
Residents and business owners in the following states have until May 1, 2025, to submit their federal returns and tax payments:

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina

Additionally, certain areas in Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia also qualify for this extension. This includes individuals and businesses who would have needed to file by April 15, 2025, and those making estimated quarterly tax payments.

California Wildfire Victims Get More Time

People affected by the California wildfires that began on January 7, 2025, have until October 15, 2025, to file their returns and make tax payments. This applies to individual taxpayers, businesses, and those making estimated tax payments.

Kentucky Disaster Victims Have Until November 3, 2025

For those impacted by severe storms, flooding, and landslides in Kentucky beginning February 14, 2025, the IRS has extended the deadline even further to November 3, 2025.

What You Need to Know About the Extensions

  • Penalties and Interest Waived: As long as you file and pay by the new deadline, you won’t face any late fees or penalties.
  • State Taxes May Differ: These extensions apply only to federal taxes. Be sure to check with your state’s tax agency for any additional relief.
