Despite the Texas property tax relief package recently signed into law by Greg Abbott, most of his residents are facing higher Texas property taxes and blame the Texas governor for it, according to the Redfield & Wilton Strategies study.

Texas Governor Abbott signed into law an $18 billion Texas property tax relief package for Texas homeowners

Under the new law, local governments are to stop applying Texas property taxes, and the state government steps in for the lost revenue. A 56% majority of residents strongly support this new property tax law while only 6% oppose it.

A majority of 57% of resident respondents to the survey said they pay Texas property tax on residential or commercial property, while 36% said they didn’t.

The same percentage of respondents said that, as far as they are aware, their Texas property tax has increased in the past year. Only 15% said their Texas Property tax has neither increased nor decreased, while 22% said it has gone down.

The Texas Property tax survey was conducted among a sample size of 814 eligible voters in Texas between February 1 and 3

The average effective Texas property tax rate is 1.60 percent, compared to the national average of 0.99 percent. Some 36% of respondents blamed the Texas state government for the high property tax rate.

A majority of 69% of respondents said that, given the state of their finances, the Texas property tax is currently a “significant amount” of a burden (36 percent) or “a fair amount” (33 percent).
