Guaranteed Income Program For The Poorest Cities

In 2019, the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration or SEED, a guaranteed income program, was introduced to 125 residents living in Stockton, California – a town with a poverty rate of 16%.

Former Mayor Michael Tubbs launched the guaranteed income program to address the poverty issues in the city and provide relief to families who do not have enough to meet basic needs and eat.

According to Defender, the guaranteed income program’s recipients, who are making below $46,033 income, were randomly selected to be granted $500 monthly for two years without any conditions to follow.

Guaranteed Income Program To Address Poverty

Some individuals criticized the guaranteed income program when it was launched because they doubted recipients would spend the money on vices like tobacco and alcohol. However, the results showed less than 1% of purchases of the vices, proving that the guaranteed income program was successful.

Aside from addressing poverty, the guaranteed income program also helped lessen the percentage of anxiety and depression cases due to financial stress.

There were already 28 municipalities that have implemented the guaranteed income program and continue encouraging others to launch it.
