The Missouri Congress requires its citizens to work in order to continue to receive food assistance formerly known as food stamps. Those who are able-bodied ages 50-54 without children are required to work at home, on site or receive on the job training as part of bipartisan compromise to avoid debt default in US. It’s a deal negotiated by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Other anti-hunger advocates and food banks warns that these requirements will cause harm to the old population, they have illness that have come with age and due to their hard work in their young age, instead they are required to work. The legislation exempts those who are veterans, young adults and homeless individuals.

Karen Siebert, an advocacy and public policy advisor at Harvesters said she is concerned with the new provision despite the exemption, that the assumption of being hungry will motivate you to work is not the case. SNAP benefits are expected to expand due to this deal up to 78,000 nationwide according to Congressional Budget offices’ estimate.
It’s unclear if it will increase or decrease the SNAP enrollment in Missouri. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities estimated that raising the age limit to 54 years old will give risks to losing benefits of 12,000 Missourians, with no clear number of citizens who may qualify for benefits.
