Young Australians receiving Youth Allowance are set to receive a boost in their payments as part of the government’s latest indexation changes. From January 1, 2025, Youth Allowance payments have increased by up to $30.60 per fortnight, depending on individual circumstances.
This adjustment is designed to help recipients keep up with the rising cost of living. However, while the increase provides some relief, many advocacy groups argue that it still falls short of what young Australians need to cover essential expenses.
How Much More Will You Get?
The increase varies based on your living situation and whether you have dependents. Here’s a breakdown of the new maximum Youth Allowance rates per fortnight:
- Single, under 18, living at home: $410.30 (increase of $17.30)
- Single, under 18, living away from home: $663.30 (increase of $24.40)
- Single, 18 or older, living at home: $472.50 (increase of $17.30)
- Single, 18 or older, living away from home: $663.30 (increase of $24.40)
- Single, with children: $836.60 (increase of $30.60)
- Couple, no children: $663.30 (increase of $24.40)
- Couple, with children: $718.10 (increase of $26.40)
For example, a single person over 18 who lives at home will now receive $472.50 per fortnight, up from $455.20. Those living away from home will see their payments increase from $638.90 to $663.30.
Who Qualifies for the Increase?
If you are already receiving Youth Allowance, the increase has been automatically applied to your payments from January 1, 2025.
Youth Allowance is available to young people who are studying full-time, undertaking an apprenticeship, or looking for work. Eligibility is determined based on factors such as age, income, assets, and whether you live at home or independently.
Why Are Payments Increasing?
The Australian government adjusts Youth Allowance payments twice a year to keep up with inflation. These increases help ensure that payments stay in line with the rising costs of rent, groceries, and other essential living expenses.
However, some critics argue that the increase is not enough to meet the growing financial pressures young people face. Many advocacy groups continue to push for a larger increase, pointing out that the cost of housing and everyday necessities continues to rise faster than welfare payments.
What’s Next?
While the increase is a step in the right direction, calls for a more substantial boost to welfare payments are growing. Many advocates are urging the government to conduct a full review of the welfare system to ensure young Australians receive enough financial support to cover their basic needs.
