Paul Davis has become the inaugural inhabitant of Common Roots’ cutting-edge eco-friendly apartment enclave nestled on South Main Street in Meadville

Operating under a cooperative rental arrangement facilitated by the non-profit organization Common Roots, Davis is part of a pioneering initiative that empowers tenants with an uncommon level of involvement.

While Common Roots retains ownership of the premises, it entrusts the facility to Davis and fellow occupants through leasing agreements. In a unique twist, these tenants shoulder the onus of property care and maintenance, mirroring the responsibilities of homeowners. Common Roots’ Community Manager, James Campbell, elaborated, “In the same vein as homeowners, they also embrace the role of stewards for the dwelling and its surroundings. Their dedication extends to tasks such as lawn care, sidewalk shoveling, and general property preservation, alleviating Common Roots of these burdens.”

In return for their dedication, these occupants accrue an ownership stake in their abodes

Davis elucidated, “We’re genuinely invested in this dwelling. Over five years, our investment can yield around $4,000, a figure that burgeons to $10,000 within a decade.”

Opting for membership in this cooperative rental paradigm, Davis highlights the financial benefits in contrast to conventional landlord-tenant arrangements. “I inhabit a one-bedroom unit and pay a modest $450 monthly, plus electricity. It’s a completely new unit,” Davis added. This innovative cooperative housing model is fostering fresh accommodation choices for the Crawford County Community.

Davis invites those seeking novel housing alternatives to explore this model, affirming, “If you’re contemplating a fresh approach to housing, come witness our success story.”

Mark your calendars for August 19, as a celebratory event commemorating the unveiling of Common Roots’ inaugural residence is scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 1189-1191 South Main Street in Meadville.
