Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has launched a strong attack on Donald Trump, accusing the former president of siding with Russian leader Vladimir Putin over Ukraine. Speaking on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Christie warned that Trump’s rhetoric could undermine U.S. foreign policy and weaken support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Trump’s Controversial Remarks on Ukraine
The controversy erupted after Trump made remarks suggesting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should show more gratitude for U.S. support. Trump accused Ukraine of pushing the world toward a larger conflict and criticized Zelenskyy’s handling of the war.
“What we have to understand is that part of the problem here is [Trump] looks and sounds like an ally of Putin,” Christie said in response. He argued that the U.S. must take a firm stance against Russian aggression and continue backing Ukraine.
Christie Criticizes Calls for Negotiations with Putin
The former governor also pushed back against Republican figures who have suggested that the U.S. should negotiate peace with Putin. Senator Marco Rubio recently expressed support for diplomatic talks, but Christie dismissed this idea as unrealistic, saying that negotiations from a position of weakness would only embolden Russia.
“The only way to deal with Putin is by showing strength. We have to make it clear that we will continue supporting Ukraine, and he will have no choice but to continue with this war,” Christie stated.
What This Means for U.S. Foreign Policy
Christie’s remarks highlight growing divisions within the Republican Party over how to handle the war in Ukraine. While some Republicans, including Trump, advocate for cutting military aid and focusing on domestic issues, others believe abandoning Ukraine would send a dangerous message to authoritarian regimes worldwide.
As the 2024 election approaches, Trump’s stance on Russia could become a major issue. His critics, including Christie, warn that weakening support for Ukraine could ultimately harm America’s global standing and embolden adversaries like China and North Korea.
Whether Trump’s comments will impact his popularity among voters remains to be seen. But for now, Christie is making it clear that he sees Trump’s words as dangerously aligned with Putin’s interests.
