In a bid to prevent government shutdowns and enhance fiscal responsibility, Congress is being urged to pass a pivotal piece of legislation known as the “Prevent Government Shutdowns Act of 2023” ten times in the year 2023

Authored by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) and co-sponsored by a group comprising nine Republicans and four Senate Democrats, the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act of 2023 takes center stage. This legislation proposes an automatic continuing resolution for 14 days if appropriations measures are not completed at the start of a new budget year, maintaining spending at the prior year’s level. The ultimate goal is to save taxpayer money without endangering government services, an initiative supported by a spectrum of centrist and conservative groups.

To reinforce these measures, daily legislative sessions, even on weekends, are mandated, coupled with a ban on Congressional and White House Office of Management and Budget staff travel until the necessary bills are passed.

Additionally, the “No Budget, No Pay Act” was introduced to hold members of Congress accountable by withholding their salaries if annual spending bills are not passed by the fiscal year’s start. Even once the bills are approved, retroactively compensating members is disallowed.

These bills are presented as commonsense, fiscally conservative solutions, as the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act proves to be costly and detrimental to the public

Prevent Government Shutdowns Act results in delays, unprocessed tax returns, closure of national parks, airport delays, reduced border protection, restricted veterans’ services, and stalled business projects. Moreover, shutdowns undermine public confidence in the government’s ability to function efficiently.

In the face of a political circus, The Prevent Government Shutdowns Act aims to offer a way forward for a more efficient and accountable government system, resonating with the interests of the public and the wise use of taxpayer funds.
