2025 Social Security Payments Begin in NJ: Here’s How They Affect You

The new year is here, and Social Security recipients in New Jersey can expect their first payments for 2025 soon. This year brings a 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), which means increased monthly benefits for millions of Americans, including New Jerseyans.

The adjustment reflects the impact of inflation and aims to help beneficiaries maintain their purchasing power. With the increase, the average monthly Social Security benefit will rise from $1,927 in 2024 to $1,976 in 2025.

When Will You Get Paid?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes payments on a staggered schedule based on the recipient’s birth date. Here’s the breakdown for January 2025:

  • January 3: Payments for those who have been receiving benefits since before May 1997.
  • January 8: Payments for recipients born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
  • January 15: Payments for recipients born between the 11th and 20th of the month.
  • January 22: Payments for recipients born between the 21st and 31st of the month.

For Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, January’s payment was issued early, on December 31, 2024, due to the New Year’s Day holiday. Additionally, February’s SSI payment will be sent out on January 31, 2025, since February 1 falls on a Saturday.

What Does the COLA Increase Mean for You?

The 2.5% COLA increase is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). This ensures that Social Security and SSI benefits keep pace with rising costs of living.

For New Jersey residents, this increase may help offset the higher costs of necessities like food, utilities, and healthcare.

How to Manage Your Benefits

The SSA encourages all beneficiaries to create a “my Social Security” account online. This platform allows you to check your COLA notice, view your benefit details, and update personal information like your address or banking details. It’s a secure way to manage your benefits without needing to visit a local office.
