A precise hue, shape, or size may not come to mind when you hear the term “serial killer eyes,” but you’d definitely know what someone is referring to. You could be forgiven for imagining that the serial killer’s eyes are visible through wire-rimmed aviators, a style of spectacles made infamous by Jeffrey Dahmer.
Evan Peters portrays serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in Monster: the Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a Netflix original series that follows Dahmer’s life from childhood to his murder at the hands of a fellow inmate.
From the time he was a teenager living with his parents Lionel and Joyce Dahmer to the time of his trial in 1992, Dahmer wore aviator-style eyeglasses and bright yellow contacts. We can infer the following about his decision-making process.
What Happened To Jeffrey Dahmer’s Glasses?
This is true, but there is one major caveat to the Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Although Dahmer had relied on his glasses for much of his life, he took them off in the courtroom. in 1992, his stepmother Shari Dahmer told Inside Edition, “Because he’s not wearing glasses, he can’t see anyone. He starts to freak out.”
Only after being sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in jail did Dahmer put on his spectacles for the entire judicial process. Due to the death penalty being abolished in Wisconsin several years before Dahmer was convicted, he was not put to death. “Frankly, I desired death for myself,” Dahmer said.
As Though All Serial Killers Wear the Same Glasses, Why Do They Seem to Share a Common Trait?
Several notorious serial killers used eyewear; these included Dorothea Puente, Harold Shipman, Wayne Williams, Dennis Nilsen, the BTK Strangler a.k.a. Dennis Rader, and Ed Kemper. Rader and Kemper wore aviators that strangely resembled Dahmer’s trademark glasses.
It’s puzzling that so many serial killers in the 1970s and 1980s favored eyewear that obscured part of the face, but this may have been a factor. These glasses may have appeared in the mugshots of numerous serial killers because they were a trendy, widely-worn style at the period.
Who Owns Jeffrey Dahmer’s Glasses?
The $150,000 price tag for a pair of Dahmer’s prison-issued eyeglasses is currently open for bidding. Taylor James, the proprietor of Cult Collectibles in Vancouver, has the gold, wire-rimmed frames used by the serial murderer for sale, but they’ll set you back a cool $200,000 (or a lot of money).
James reportedly got his hands on the frames after being contacted by Lionel Dahmer’s ex-housekeeper, as reported by TMZ. James agreed to sell the glasses in exchange for a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of other Jeffrey Dahmer memorabilia, including documentation, flatware, photographs, and a Bible.
