The New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley (/sekwn/ SAY-Kwon; born February 9, 1997) plays in the National Football League (NFL). After three years of college football at Penn State, Barkley graduated in 2018 and signed with an NFL team. He finished his collegiate career with 5,557 all-purpose yards.
Career
Barkley garnered widespread acclaim and placed in the top five of many national polls, including a fourth-place finish in Heisman Trophy voting (with 304 votes) and a third- The Big Ten Conference and the nation at large honoured him with numerous accolades.
In his three years as a Nittany Lion, Barkley set or tied a number of school marks, including the all-time mark for running touchdowns, the all-time record for rushing yards by a freshman and sophomore, and the all-time record for total yards in a game. In the 2018 NFL Draft, the New York Giants picked Barkley second overall.
Barkley rushed for more than 1,300 yards in his debut season with the New York Giants in 2018, breaking a number of records both for the team and the league. He was honoured as the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year and invited to play in this year’s Pro Bowl.
Barkley’s time with the Giants in 2019 and 2020 was cut short by injuries. His ACL tear in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears cost him the majority of the 2020 campaign.

Barkley had an uncharacteristically poor rushing day, gaining just 56 yards on 20 carries, in the Hoosiers’ season opener versus Indiana in the Big Ten. Despite this, he had a significant impact on the game, as evidenced by his 97-yard kickoff return score, four receptions for 52 yards, and a game-winning 16-yard pass to receiver DaeSean Hamilton in the final minutes of Penn State’s 45-14 victory.
For Barkley, this became the first time in Big Ten history that a player had scored a touchdown through return and throw in the same game. After a stellar performance on special teams, Barkley was honoured as the conference’s Player of the Week.
Barkley returned the opening kickoff for a score for the second straight game a month later against Ohio State, but he only managed 44 yards on 21 carries, 36 of which came on a touchdown run in the second quarter.
Against the Washington Huskies in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl, Barkley’s final game as a Penn State Nittany Lion, he rushed for 137 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a 92-yard touchdown run that put Penn State up 28-7.
