After escaping from police custody at a hospital in Washington, D.C., a murder suspect is still at large. Wednesday afternoon, according to the officials. The Metropolitan Police Department offered a $25,000 reward on Thursday for information that would result in the suspect’s capture.
Suspect Christopher Haynes “escaped custody”
CBS News reported that just after 3:30 p.m., police reported on social media that murder suspect Christopher Haynes “escaped custody” at George Washington University Hospital. Wednesday local time.
According to Pamela Smith, acting chief of police for the Metropolitan Police Department, Haynes had complained of ankle pain from a prior injury, so officers took him to the hospital for treatment. At the hospital, an officer was adjusting Haynes’ handcuffs when murder suspect Haynes attacked the officer and ran away, according to Smith.
After the escape on Wednesday afternoon, George Washington University issued a shelter-in-place order that was eventually withdrawn. The culprit was spotted on a nearby resident’s security camera in their yard while donning only white socks and no shoes, according to the police.
Police: Brent Haywood’s murder was the reason for Haynes to be detained
According to a news release from the police, Brent Haywood’s murder on August 12 was the reason for Haynes, 30, to be detained earlier on Wednesday and to be charged with a “homicide offense.”
Although it was not specified in the press release if Haynes was armed, it did urge people to phone 911 and refrain from confronting him. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, gray shorts, and white socks, with black handcuffs hanging from his right wrist, according to the police, who described him as a Black male, 6’0″ in height, weighing roughly 205 pounds, reports from CNN.
