In a distressing incident at the Gare de Lyon train station in Paris, a man armed with a knife and a hammer wounded three individuals in an early morning attack, says the Paris police chief, raising security concerns ahead of the upcoming Summer Games in the city.

Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez Speaks Out

Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez addressed the situation, indicating that the assailant, who carried residency papers from Italy and medications suggesting mental health treatment, may have psychiatric issues. Despite the ongoing investigation, Nunez emphasized that there were no indications of terrorist involvement in the attack.

The suspect launched the assault at 7:35 a.m. within one of the station’s expansive halls, targeting passersby with a hammer and a knife. The attack left one person severely wounded and two others with lighter injuries. Additionally, a fourth individual was left in a state of shock, possibly constituting another minor injury.

Passersby, along with railway police officers, intervened swiftly to detain the suspect, who is currently in police custody. Authorities are examining the weapons used in the attack, with a potential preliminary charge of attempted murder under consideration by the Paris prosecutor’s office.
