Kenneth Brown, the ex-boyfriend of Maria Roque, a 34-year-old Austin woman killed during a domestic dispute in December, has been arrested and charged with her murder. The tragic incident occurred in front of Roque’s home on North Long Avenue when Brown allegedly shot her. Roque had previously obtained an emergency order of protection against Brown in November, citing a history of physical violence and threats.
Protective Order Violation Leads to Tragedy
Despite the court-issued emergency order of protection, Brown reportedly violated its terms, fatally shooting Roque on December 13. The order prohibited any contact, harassment, stalking, or intimidation, as well as restricting Brown from taking custody of their 8-year-old daughter. The tragic incident highlights the challenges and potential shortcomings of protective measures in cases of domestic violence.
Prior to Brown’s arrest, Chicago police sought public assistance in locating him. The Cook County Crime Stoppers had planned to distribute flyers offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Fortunately, minutes before the distribution, news of Brown’s arrest emerged. The community’s cooperation and information sharing played a crucial role in aiding law enforcement in apprehending the suspect.
Community Assistance and Arrest
The arrest and subsequent charging of Kenneth Brown in Maria Roque’s murder bring a bittersweet sense of closure to this tragic chapter. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the urgency surrounding domestic violence and the need for continued advocacy to protect potential victims.
As legal proceedings unfold, the community’s collaborative efforts stand as a testament to the importance of collective action in ensuring public safety and preventing further instances of domestic violence.
