Assistant to Alabama Lawmaker Pleads Guilty to Stealing Public Funds
Varrie Johnson Kindall an assistant to Alabama Representative John Rogers admitted she helped steal public money. She took part in a plan to take almost $200,000 from the Jefferson County Community Service Fund. This money was supposed to help a youth baseball league but it was taken by Kindall and others. She also took money from an organization Rogers was involved with. Kindall has to pay back the money she stole. She could go to jail for up to 20 years and pay a fine of up to $250,000. She will be sentenced on June 26.
Kindalls guilty plea means Rogers is the only person left accused in the plan. He says he did nothing wrong. But he is charged with many crimes like stealing public money and lying to investigators. His trial was going to be in June but it was moved to another time. Kindalls guilty plea also means she has another case to face. She took money from her dead parents. She will be sentenced for both cases on June 26.
