Amazon Prime Video Greenlights Adaptation of Ed Brubaker’s “Criminal” Comic Series

In a major development, Amazon Prime Video has granted a series order for the adaptation of Ed Brubaker’s acclaimed comic book series, “Criminal.” The drama, set to be available exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries, will be co-showrun by Brubaker and Jordan Harper, known for his work on shows like “Hightown” and “Gotham.” Brubaker and illustrator Sean Phillips, the iconic duo behind the original graphic novels, will also serve as executive producers for the project.

A Gritty Tale Unfolds

Originally published under Marvel Comics’ Icon imprint, “Criminal” is a beloved creator-owned series, earning the prestigious Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2007. The stories, set in the fictional Center City, follow various characters within the same universe. The narrative kicks off with Tommy Patterson, head of the city’s notorious pickpocket crew, and his partner Ivan. Tommy’s arrest for murder thrusts Ivan into the responsibility of caring for Tommy’s eight-year-old son, Leo.

Brubaker, expressing excitement about bringing the decade-long world-building to life, lauded Amazon’s support for the project. Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD wholly owned development for Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the global appeal of “Criminal” and the anticipation of Prime Video customers embracing the gritty story. The series, produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Legendary Television, promises a captivating exploration of crime and redemption.

Joining Brubaker, Phillips, and Harper in the executive production team are Sarah Carbiener and Phillip Barnett. Amazon’s commitment to realizing the creators’ vision adds to the anticipation surrounding the adaptation, promising an enthralling visual rendition of the intricate world crafted in the pages of “Criminal.”
