The case remained unsolved until 2018 when the state crime lab identified a potential DNA match to Nichols. Despite the victim having moved out of state, officers located her in March 2023, and a subsequent DNA test confirmed Nichols’ involvement. An arrest warrant was issued, setting his bond at $500,000 cash/surety.
In a separate incident, Nichols faces a rape charge based on an interview conducted by the Crimes Against Children Division in December 2022. The victim reported Nichols had been staying at her home, and he sexually abused her while she slept. Nichols admitted to the incident during an interview at the prison, leading to a second arrest warrant with a bond set at $1 million cash/surety.
