James Allen Wilson, the superintendent of the East Gibson School Corporation, was detained by Gibson County deputies on Monday after he skipped his initial court appearance on a DUI allegation.
Wilson had signed a contract promising not to access East Gibson School Corporation property
The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office reports that at 3:54 pm, deputies served Wilson with an arrest warrant in his Oakland City house. According to a press release, Mr. Wilson arrived and was promptly taken into custody without any trouble before being transferred directly to the Vanderburgh County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond.
In an article from Courier Press, Wilson had been placed on administrative leave prior to his original arrest on Saturday morning, according to Gibson County School Board attorney Jason Spindler, who spoke to the Courier & Press on Monday afternoon. Spindler also clarified a previous report that claimed Wilson had been prohibited from being on school grounds.
Spindler claimed that Wilson had signed a contract promising not to access East Gibson School Corporation property; however, this contract had nothing to do with any alleged illegal activity. Spindler claimed that the two parties reached an understanding five days before Vanderburgh County deputies detained Wilson, 55, for allegedly operating a vehicle while under the influence of prescription sedatives and amphetamines.

Wilson was officially charged with two misdemeanors on Monday
Wilson was initially detained early on Saturday morning, and after submitting a cash bond with the clerk’s office, he was later freed from the Vanderburgh County jail, according to court and booking records.
In an article from Yahoo News, Wilson was officially charged with two misdemeanors on Monday by the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office: driving while drunk and driving while intoxicated-with endangerment.
Wilson’s first court appearance in Vanderburgh County Superior Court was set for 1:15 p.m., according to court records. But he didn’t show up on Monday. For Wilson’s arrest, a judge issued a bench warrant.
The East Gibson School Board had mostly been silent up until Monday afternoon addressing Wilson’s work status, any pending disciplinary action, and reports that he had been prohibited from being on school property before his arrest.
Three days before to Wilson’s initial arrest, WFIE-NBC14 in Evansville reported that he had been prohibited from entering school grounds, information the outlet ascribed to an anonymous member of the school board.
Since then, posts about Wilson’s arrest have drawn the ire and alarm of hundreds of social media users, who have demanded that school administrators tell the public of further details.
Gibson County Sheriff Bruce Vanoven informed journalists in a news release that his office was not looking into any employees of the school corporation after WFIE published its report.
