After a formal inquiry and many claims of rape and sexual misconduct against French actor Gerard Depardieu, 56 renowned French artists and producers are supporting him.
Prominent French Figures Rally Behind Gerard Depardieu in Open Letter Amidst Sexual Assault Allegations
Former First Lady Carla Bruni, singer-songwriter Carole Bousquet (Depardieu’s ex-partner), and acclaimed actors Pierre Richard, Charlotte Rampling, and Victoria Abril signed the open letter in conservative French newspaper Le Figaro. As the 74-year-old actor confronts serious claims, two dozen signatories are women, many from Depardieu’s generation.
Based on Depardieu’s status as “probably the greatest actor,” the letter criticizes a “lynching” and “torrent of hatred” without recognizing the presumption of innocence. Without Depardieu’s film legacy, he would have the same presumption of innocence, according to the undersigned.
Macron called the sexual assault claims against Depardieu a “witch hunt.” Macron said Depardieu makes France proud on a French talk show. Macron rejects calls to remove Depardieu’s Legion of Honour medal.

Depardieu Faces Legal Battle as Formal Inquiry Begins
When Charlotte Arnould sued Depardieu in 2018, she claimed two sexual assaults at his home during rehearsals. Depardieu was charged with rape in France in 2020. The Paris Court of Appeal dismissed Depardieu’s request to discontinue the complaint in March 2023, starting a formal inquiry that may result in a trial or dismissal.
Throughout the trial, Depardieu has maintained his innocence. A “rapist or predator,” he denied in an open letter. Between 2004 and 2022, 13 women accused Depardieu of sexual assault in 11 films.
Despite significant claims, the actor’s defenders, notably French film industry leaders and the president, rely on the presumption of innocence.
