The Kidnapping

According to an affidavit, Sablan kidnapped the teenager from San Antonio after driving up next to her and threatening her. The 13-year-old girl, who showed remarkable courage and quick thinking, managed to escape from Sablan’s clutches by writing “help me” on paper and delivering it to someone passing by.

Federal authorities promptly arrested Sablan in California after the girl’s rescue. He has since admitted to kidnapping and sexually assaulting the teenager. The details of the assault have not been made public, but it is clear that the victim has suffered a grievous trauma that will require extensive support and care.

A sentencing hearing has been set for October 25, 2024. Given the gravity of the crimes, Sablan is likely to face the maximum sentence of life in prison. The mandatory minimum of 20 years he will undoubtedly receive is a sobering reminder of the consequences of such heinous actions.
