The National Hockey League’s Philadelphia Flyers’ Anthony “Tony” DeAngelo, born on October 24, 1995, is an American professional ice hockey defenseman (NHL). Prior to joining the Hurricanes, he played for the Rangers, Coyotes, and Rangers all in the same season.
To become the youngest-ever USHL player, DeAngelo moved to Cedar Rapids at the age of 14 from his hometown of Sewell, New Jersey, where he played minor ice hockey until then.
Controversy
Everybody knows Tony DeAngelo’s story, whether it’s in the NHL or not. His profession has been one in which the positives he puts into it are always counterbalanced by an alienating negative. The fallout from his 2019-20 season (53 points in 68 games) was so significant that the NHL effectively suspended him for the remainder of the current season in an effort to stem the tide of negative publicity.
Since joining the NHL, he has been involved in numerous incidents of violence, including hitting his goaltender, throwing a social media tantrum when former President Trump was banned from Twitter, and trying to cover up his previous OHL penalty for using racist slurs on the field. “This led to him being exiled for less than one year, after being purchased by the New York Rangers,” he said.

DeAngelo can play well on the defensive end to try to detract from his past and present
It will be spoken about as previously said. That thing is certain: he’ll attract a lot of fans, but he’ll also alienate a lot of them. To be honest, I’m baffled as to how, on a club that has had Cam Atkinson and Jake Voracek gone to “alter the culture,” adding DeAngelo, renowned for his aggressive locker-room antics, shows clear contempt for the hard work done to achieve that goal. Managers definitely shared this sentiment, and I’m not saying that the job resulted in any success.
You don’t hear a lot about the interpersonal dynamics in NHL locker rooms, and the league is generally quiet about them. DeAngelo’s altercation with the New York Rangers was particularly shocking in light of this information (albeit unsurprising). That DeAngelo has been able to maintain such a high level of controversy in a league such as the NHL says a lot about him.
We don’t know how his new teammates will feel about him or what will happen when he inevitably stirs up a storm in the locker room for the Flyers. Many fans are baffled by this decision, as they were hoping to develop a winning culture and avoid a re-build.

Career
However, owing to a knee injury, DeAngelo’s time with the RoughRiders was cut short, and he was drafted by Sarnia of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) at the 2011 OHL Priority Selection Draft. During his sophomore year, he contributed 58 points to Sting’s offensive output. In 2015, he was traded to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, where he earned the Max Kaminsky Trophy for OHL defenseman and the CHL Defenceman of the Year award.
Later that year, DeAngelo signed an entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning after being selected 19th overall by the league in the 2014 NHL entry draught. Having spent one season with Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League, DeAngelo was moved to the Coyotes in 2016 and made his NHL debut that year. When he was dealt to the Rangers in 2017, he continued to improve his play until the 2019–20 NHL season was cut short due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
