You seem really down as you sit there. Do you wish to ride a jet ski for the first time? You have nothing left to live for. When it comes to airplanes, you’ve never done a parachute jump. Under her video, many viewers called Hanna out for suggesting such pricey pastimes, and the YouTuber addressed some of these concerns in the comments section.

A remark with 165 likes read: “Would love to ‘find a hobby,’ but unfortunately I’ve ‘had to pay my bills,’ and have to work 16 hours a day.” Hanna retorted, “Damn sis you have time to watch and comment on TikToks but you can’t learn an instrument or how to knit? It’s up to you, my friend.

For example, in response to the 21-liked remark “this would be excellent advice if everyone had unlimited funds to do those fun activities,” Hanna wrote, “U don’t need endless funds to develop a passion.”

Over the past week, the controversy has grown as YouTube drama channels

They often comment on influencer controversies, and have released videos echoing a sentiment that her TikTok was “privileged” and “tone-deaf” towards many people who might not be able to afford equipment for sports or leisure activities, and wrong to imply that hobbies can cure depression.

Associate professor of neurology at the University of Reading Ciara McCabe writes in The Conversation that even persons with clinical depression can benefit from taking up a pastime. She does, however, suggest consulting a therapist or doctor for advice on what course of treatment might be most effective for a given person.

Previously, Hanna has been open about her struggles with mental health. The criticism she’s received led her to believe she was “crazy” and take a hiatus from social media, as she discussed on the “Check Your Head” podcast in April 2021.

In 2013, Hanna first gained notoriety on the now-defunct short-video website Vine. She later joined David Dobrik’s Vlog Squad as an original member and gained 5.3 million subscribers with her own channel, which she used to post comedic skits. Both an album of her own music and a collection of her poetry have been issued. This past year, Hanna upped her TikTok activity considerably, posting regular updates about her life along with videos of her singing.

The 31-year-old has caused a stir in a number of scandals over the past several years. The drama networks of July 2020 condemned her for posting a video on YouTube that had a graphic image of a deceased adolescent. In a tweet, Hanna explained that she had apologized directly to the mother of the dead teen. She has also been involved in high-profile fights with other influencers including Trisha Paytas and her ex-friend Jessi Smiles. After being asked for comment by Insider, Gabbie Hanna has yet to provide any feedback.
