The American actor and musician Ansel Elgort was born on March 14, 1994. He got his start in acting with a little part in the horror thriller Carrie (2013), and then he broke out with his portrayal of a young cancer patient in the romantic drama film The Fault in Our Stars (2014), and then he got another small part in the Divergent Series (2014–2016).
A Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy came his way in 2017 for his portrayal of the main character in Edgar Wright’s action thriller Baby Driver. He also played Tony in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 movie adaptation of West Side Story, for which he received widespread acclaim.
Controversy
Though the version of “West Side Story” directed by Steven Spielberg has been well praised, a sexual assault claim against star Ansel Elgort from 2020 persists. His co-stars who are women have now been asked to comment on this accusation.
In June 2020, nine months after principal photography on the musical had completed, a woman tweeted allegations that the actor had attacked her in 2014. (when she was 17 and he was 20). Elgort claimed that he “never and would never assault somebody,” but as the pandemic news cycle continued and the musical’s debut was delayed, Elgort avoided talking about the incident during his little promotion of the buzzy picture at the end of last year.
The 27-year-old showed up to the New York premiere in November, did group interviews, and promoted the film on “The Late Late Show” without once addressing the controversy. Others, however, saw nothing wrong with calling out the actor for acting as if the allegation didn’t exist in the comments area of the YouTube video of his interview with James Corden, despite the actor’s affable demeanor.
However, months after its underwhelming theatrical premiere, “West Side Story” has continued to be promoted along with its cast as it competes for Academy Prizes and other critical awards.

Thus, Elgort’s co-stars addressed the claim in a Wednesday article for the Hollywood Reporter, and as the site highlighted, they were reticent in their responses and lavished love on the actor. The feature focused on Zegler, Moreno, and DeBose. (Elgort did not take part in the interview, and THR reports that Spielberg declined to comment.)
DeBose, 31 years old: “Nobody really knows what’s going on in anyone’s thoughts.” In other words, “No one saves those who were there at the time can truly understand what transpired.”
Moreno, a 90-year-old veteran actor, added, “I think it would have been utterly horrible and wrong for anyone to take sides in that situation.” I have no business passing judgment.
Zegler, who plays Elgort’s love interest in the musical revival, is 20 years old and shared similar feelings, expanding on them to address the topic more broadly.
A lot has changed since we made the movie two and a half years ago, she told THR. Both in the open and behind closed doors, a lot has changed. Many people have come to their senses. You can only pray that everyone involved is fine, that questions are answered with due respect, and that they get a chance to speak for themselves.
According to Variety
On June 19, 2020, a lady named Gabby who claimed to be a fan of the “Baby Driver” and “The Fault in Our Stars” stars submitted the allegation on Twitter. She said that after meeting on Snapchat, Ansel Elgort sexually assaulted her.
In the now-deleted post, Gabby claimed that this was her first experience with sexual activity and that she “was only a kid.” Elgort allegedly told her, “We need to break you in,” even though she was “sobbing in anguish.”
A day after tweeting her account, Variety claimed that Elgort had denied the claims in an Instagram post. His relationship with the woman was “short, legal, and totally consenting,” he stated. Then, he did what he later called “an immature and nasty thing to do to someone” by ghosting her.
His remark, in which he insisted that “her description of events is simply not what happened” and “I have never and would never abuse anyone,” was also removed.
