JOPPER IS CANNON, anyone needs to hear that. The Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers kiss that we’ve all been waiting for was finally given to us in Stranger Things 4 Volume 2, and then some, following an emotional reunion in Volume 1.
The final two episodes of the series were a smorgasbord of Jopper moments for the audience after six long years of will-they-won’t-they antics. However, that breathtakingly exquisite second kiss would not have taken place if David Harbour and Winona Ryder hadn’t been there.
Unscripted moments that appeared in the season finale episode were revealed on Twitter
It was revealed by the Stranger Things writer’s account after Volume 2 was released. One was delivered by Joseph Quinn, who improvised Eddie’s heartbreaking parting words to Dustin (“I love you, man”). The second moment was when Max was dying in Caleb McLaughlin’s arms and he cried out in agony for his sister Erica.
The third, which wasn’t in the script, was Hopper and Joyce’s second kiss. On the day of filming, Winona and David really added that. Jopper shippers finally get what they’ve been longing for since season 1 in episode 9. Hopper and Joyce are alone in the chapel after returning to Yuri’s warehouse following their reconciliation.
Before Joyce leaves to check on Hopper, they quickly exchange their clothes in different corners, stealing glances at one another. They ultimately make out after talking about their upcoming Enzo’s date and exchanging flirtatious fantasies about breadsticks, lasagna, wine, and dessert. What would have happened if the phone hadn’t rung?
For the sake of documentation and because I intend to revisit that scene, here is a picture of it. To end the Demogorgon’s reign of terror once and for all, the crew returns to the jail, and Hopper discusses the strategy with Joyce and Murray.
Hop and Joyce enjoy a moment in front of the monitors
Joyce experiences distressing flashbacks of Bob Newby being murdered by a demo dog right in front of her. The ending didn’t sit well with her (she had previously seen this movie).
She is reassured that this time would be different by Hopper, who senses her anxiety. Before departing to bait the demo dog, he cradles her face in his palm and gives her another, much more gentle kiss on the lips.
However, that kiss did not follow a plan. When David Harbour and Winona Ryder themselves inserted the kiss on the day of filming, it was the perfect addition.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast
Matt and Ross Duffer provided some additional clarification, saying that the second kiss was “an idea that they had on the spot.” It appears that Hopper intended to leave the room without bidding Joyce farewell before leaving to once more risk death once it was revealed that the second kiss was not scripted.

He would, however, kiss her goodbye, of course. That is a given. And why did they choose that particular moment to exchange such a gentle kiss? The actors made the perfect decision, which was the right call in every way.
Thanks to David Harbour and Winona Ryder, everyone is now exclaiming.
