The recasting of Kristen Bell as Molly, Owen, and Paige’s (Leslie Odom Jr.) biracial daughter (Kathryn Hahn), means that she will appear in Season 3 of Central Park as a new character. Bell will play Paige’s younger sister Abby when the animated musical series returns to Apple TV+ on September 9th. Emmy Raver-Lampman previously played the half-Black character.

Sam Richardson, Ike Barinholtz, Ben Schwartz, Zoe Chao, Ron Funches, Jack McBrayer, Amber Ruffin, Yvette Nicole Brown, Craig Robinson, Tim Meadows, and David Alan Grier will all appear in the upcoming season 3.
The Central Park crew revealed in 2020 that Molly would be recast with a Black actor following Jenny Slate’s announcement that her interracial Big Mouth character would be recast. According to Bouchard and Co., “Kristen and everyone else on the creative team recognizes that the casting of Molly is an opportunity to get representation right—to hire a Black or mixed-race actor and give Molly a voice that connects with all the subtlety and experiences” of the character.

The statement went on to say, “We deeply regret that we might have contributed to anyone’s feeling of exclusion or erasure. People of color have worked on Central Park and will continue to work on it, but we can do better, says a leader. During an interview with EW last year, Odom lauded the team’s decision to go with the unconventional route.
An opportunity to be on the right side of history in real-time, he explained. “In the blink of an eye, the world is going to change. As the world evolves, if you want to develop and adapt with it, you may have to let go of some things and reimagine who you are and who you could be.”
Odom went on to say, “I praised the choice.’” “I figured it was one of those situations where you should have done better knowing what you know now. My wife and I just had our first child, a daughter. The great Kristen Bell was also praised by me. We kept the momentum going.”
