Albany, NY – Snow squalls and lake effect snow are set to hit Eastern New York, creating hazardous travel conditions starting Monday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for parts of the region, including Herkimer County.
According to the NWS, scattered snow showers and embedded snow squalls are expected Monday afternoon and evening. Areas from Albany north and westward could experience reduced visibility and slippery roads during the evening commute. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and plan for delays.
The most significant impacts are anticipated Monday afternoon as lake effect snow intensifies. The storm is predicted to last through Wednesday morning, potentially leaving behind several inches of snow in some areas. Forecasts show northern Herkimer County could see the heaviest snowfall, with accumulations of 2-3 inches likely.
Lake effect snow bands may extend into Hamilton and central Herkimer Counties, though the exact snowfall placement remains uncertain. These conditions could cause travel disruptions, particularly along major highways. The Winter Storm Watch for heavy snow takes effect Monday at 4 p.m. and remains active until Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Residents are advised to monitor updates from the NWS for changes to the forecast. Precautionary measures, including avoiding unnecessary travel and preparing emergency kits, are recommended.
