Chicago, IL – Snowfall of up to half an inch is expected across the Chicago area Sunday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts snowfall between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., with localized heavier rates near the I-55 and I-57 corridors.
According to the NWS, snow may fall at a rate of up to 0.5 inches per hour in some areas, making roads and sidewalks treacherous. After 10 a.m., the snow may transition into freezing drizzle as temperatures begin to climb above freezing. The risk of slippery conditions will remain high through the late morning hours.
Motorists and pedestrians should exercise caution during the morning. Reduced visibility, icy sidewalks, and slick roads may delay travel or lead to accidents. Residents traveling early are urged to reduce speed, increase following distances, and allow for extra time on their routes.
By early afternoon, temperatures may rise enough to alleviate some of the icy conditions, but authorities urge continued vigilance throughout the day. Snow accumulation is expected to total less than a half-inch in most locations, though heavier amounts may occur near highways.
The NWS reminds residents to check road and weather updates before heading out and to prepare emergency kits for travel. Snow this season continues to disrupt traffic in Chicago, prompting officials to stress the importance of winter driving safety.
