Billings, MT – A significant winter storm continues to blanket Montana with heavy snow and high winds, making travel hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm is expected to last until Monday morning, bringing between 6 and 30 inches of snow across several regions. The heaviest snowfall—up to 2.5 feet—is predicted in the Bighorn Mountains of Montana and Wyoming, while areas like the Wolf Mountains could see up to 18 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph will create widespread blowing snow, reducing visibility to dangerous levels.
The storm began Friday afternoon with rain and freezing rain, causing icy road conditions. Snow started falling Saturday morning and will persist through Sunday night. Travel has become treacherous across major routes, including US Highway 14 through the Bighorn Mountains. The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Warning covering areas such as Crow Agency, Hardin, Pryor, and Cooke City.
Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel. “Conditions are extremely hazardous, and travel could become impossible in some areas,” the NWS warned. Motorists who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights.
The storm is also impacting recreational activities in mountainous areas, including the Absaroka/Beartooth and Crazy Mountains. High winds, with gusts up to 60 mph in higher elevations, will exacerbate already challenging conditions.
Officials encourage checking Montana’s 511 road status hotline before venturing out. Preparations should be made for potential power outages caused by heavy snow and strong winds.
