Beckley, WV –A powerful winter storm continues to blanket parts of West Virginia and Virginia with heavy snow Friday evening. Accumulations between 4 and 7 inches are expected in southeast West Virginia by Saturday evening.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Boone, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, and Wyoming Counties are under a Winter Storm Warning until 4 p.m. Saturday. Farther north, Raleigh, Fayette, and Nicholas Counties face warnings through 7 p.m. Saturday. Buchanan and Dickenson Counties in Virginia are also under alert, with snow expected to ease by 1 p.m.
Slippery roads pose significant travel hazards, especially in mountainous areas. Authorities recommend staying off roads if possible. Drivers who must travel are urged to carry flashlights, food, and water for emergencies.
Snow began early Friday and will continue in waves overnight, intensifying Saturday morning. Temperatures in the region remain near freezing, increasing the risk of icy surfaces. The storm has already impacted highways and smaller rural routes.
Officials stress monitoring local weather updates. Information on road conditions is available via state 511 systems or online traffic portals. Power outages are possible as snow accumulates on trees and power lines. Residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions.
