Columbia, SC – A powerful winter storm continues to blanket parts of Georgia and South Carolina with ice and snow. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday.
According to the NWS, freezing rain will bring additional ice accumulations between one-tenth and one-quarter inch, with isolated snow accumulations up to two-tenths of an inch. The affected areas include central South Carolina cities like Columbia, Lancaster, and Camden, along with parts of east-central Georgia, including Augusta and Lincolnton.
Travel has become treacherous, with roads coated in ice and slush. Officials warn that driving could be nearly impossible in some regions. Power outages and tree damage are increasingly likely as ice continues to accumulate. The storm has already disrupted Friday evening commutes and could worsen overnight.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. The NWS recommends keeping an emergency kit in vehicles, including flashlights, food, and water, for those who must venture out.
The freezing rain is expected to taper off by early Saturday morning, but hazardous conditions may persist as temperatures remain below freezing in some areas. Road maintenance crews are working to treat major routes, but icy conditions could linger through the weekend.
The storm marks one of the first significant winter weather events of the year for the region, leaving residents and officials preparing for potential impacts well into Saturday.
