Memphis, TN – A significant winter storm is moving into the Mid-South tonight, bringing heavy snow and ice accumulations. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts up to 6 inches of snow in parts of Tennessee and surrounding states by Friday morning.
According to the NWS Memphis office, snow totals will be highest along and north of Interstate 40, with sleet likely in northern Mississippi. Ice accumulations in northern Mississippi could reach 0.10 inches, causing slick roads and dangerous driving conditions. Areas south of the Tennessee-Mississippi border may experience mixed precipitation.
The storm is expected to create hazardous travel conditions beginning tonight and continuing through Friday. Authorities urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel as snow and ice could make roads impassable. Elevated surfaces, such as bridges and overpasses, are particularly at risk of becoming slick.
Light icing may mix with rain in northern Mississippi, reducing its duration but still creating hazardous conditions. The greatest impacts will occur in areas affected by heavy snow and sleet. The NWS warns residents to prepare for potential power outages and delayed commutes.
The winter storm warning remains in effect through Friday afternoon. Meteorologists predict snow will taper off by mid-morning, but residual impacts will linger.
