Some senior citizens in Cape Ann, who are facing the financial hardships of paying off their property tax will receive help through a state initiative program.
Property Tax Abatements for Seniors!
Seniors who struggled to pay property tax are donating some of their time to their towns or cities to receive tax reductions on their property tax bills as part of the initiative.
Gloucester City Council voted 8-0 last week to permit the city to create senior and veteran property tax work-off programs. Aged 60 and older and veteran homeowners would lower their property tax bills by participating in the program.
Rockport and Manchester-by-the-Sea offer the chance for seniors to volunteer in exchange for reduced property tax. However, some communities in the region already offer senior property tax work-off programs including, but not limited to: Salem, Beverly, Danvers, Boxford, Ipswich, Hamilton, Wenham, Marblehead, and Middleton, according to various articles.

Senior Citizen Property Tax Work-Off Abatement Policy in Rockport was established by a vote at the annual Town Meeting
According to the Rockport website, “The goal is to reduce the amount of property tax for participating senior citizens by a maximum of $750 per household,”.
Seniors older than 60 with a primary residence in Rockport and with a gross income at or below $64,000 for individuals or $96,000 for couples may qualify for the reduced property program. Applicants with the most financial need will receive priority in the placement process.
