The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service modifies SNAP maximum allotments depending on cost of living at the start of each federal fiscal year. This is referred to as a COLA adjustment, and it represents the sum of money required to maintain a minimal standard of living. The maximum monthly SNAP payment for a family of four went up from $939 to $973 for the majority of the territories and states.
