Hours before his execution, Kenneth Eugene Smith, the convicted murderer from Alabama who was killed by nitrogen gas on Thursday night, was given his final dinner, according to prison officials.
Smith was given steak with A.1 dressing, hash browns, and eggs for his last supper, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections. Prior to that, he was given breakfast in the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, which included 2 biscuits, eggs, grape jelly, apple juice, and orange juice.
Smith, 58, was declared dead at 8:25 p.m. after depriving himself of oxygen by inhaling pure nitrogen gas using a face mask. Since the introduction of lethal injection in 1982, this form of execution was the first to be employed in the United States.
