Google software worker Liren Chen, 27, was found “spattered in blood” at his Santa Clara, California, home after allegedly murdering his wife, Xuanyi Yu. On January 16, a brutal attack occurred at the posh home miles south of Google’s Silicon Valley headquarters.
Engineer’s Grisly Alleged Crime
A concerned friend called for a welfare check after seeing Chen motionless on his knees with hands in the air via a window. An acquaintance worried about the pair called 911. Chen allegedly refused to answer calls or unlock the door when police arrived.
Officers entered the home and found Chen with a swollen, purple right hand near his wife’s corpse. Yu sustained tragic head injuries from blunt force. Chen was charged with assault with blood on his clothing, legs, arms, and hands and scratches on his arm.
Chen and Yu were Google workers, the company said. The couple’s Google connection adds to the crime’s horror. An acquaintance’s warning and police intervention resulted in Chen’s murder charge.

Unusual Behavior Sparks Concern
Chen’s unusual actions, especially his refusal to cooperate with police, prompted worries. When investigated, Yu’s death was a severe attack, leaving blood and trauma at the crime scene. Chen’s hospitalization after murder accusations delays his arraignment until January 22. Jeff Rosen, the District Attorney, warned of the dangers of domestic abuse and urged victims to approach police.
Google spokesman Bailey Tomson offered Xuanyi Yu’s family words of condolence, shocked and heartbroken. The tragedy highlights the need for domestic violence support and awareness in the tech community.
According to their LinkedIn profiles, Chen and Yu studied at Tsinghua University in China and UC San Diego. The neighborhood is reeling from this horrific occurrence, raising discussions on domestic abuse.
