The Cold Case and Long-standing Mystery
Three girls, aged 11, 13, and 14, were kidnapped, assaulted, and left in a cornfield in August 1975. Despite surviving the attack, no clear suspect was identified at the time. The case went cold until recent advancements in forensic technology and investigative techniques provided the breakthrough.
Thomas Edward Williams, who lived in Indianapolis near the crime scene, has been posthumously identified as the attacker. DNA evidence and forensic genetic genealogy played a crucial role in confirming his involvement. Williams died in a Texas prison at the age of 49 in November 1983.
Investigators, prompted by the survivors’ contact in 2018, re-examined the case. In 2021, a full DNA profile was developed from crime scene evidence and matched to two additional DNA profiles. Ancestry analysis and samples from Williams’ relatives aided in confirming his identity as the assailant.
