On January 15, Ontario’s Juneteenth Education Technology Mobile Arts Centers Inc. Unity Breakfast will memorialize Rose Parker, who was imprisoned in 1986 for killing her violent ex-boyfriend. For her perseverance and advocacy, the foundation will grant Parker a civil rights award. Parker was imprisoned for 27 years to life in Ontario after shooting her abusive ex-boyfriend in self-defense. After Parker’s ex-boyfriend realized she was pregnant by another man, he threatened her and her children.
Rose Parker: From Prison to Advocacy, A Tale of Redemption and Empowerment
Parker was paroled by then-Governor Gray Davis in 2000 due to her difficult condition. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger pardoned her in 2010 for her difficult circumstances. Parker transformed her life after her discharge. Parker obtained many honorary degrees, became a clergyman, and founded Saving Our Women in Rialto after leaving the California Institution for Women in Chino. Her nonprofit helps survivors of domestic abuse, demonstrating her desire to help others.
The Unity Breakfast at the Ontario Airport DoubleTree Hotel will honor Parker’s courage and dedication to ending domestic abuse. Parker’s transformation from prison to advocacy and community service will be celebrated at the 8:30–11:30 a.m. brunch.
Rose Parker’s tale is one of redemption, empowerment, and how support and understanding can change painful experiences. Her award honors her triumph over adversity and her commitment to Saving Our Women, which empowers domestic abuse survivors.
