Democratic legislators in Washington state are considering levying an extra fee on citizens for “the pleasure of using ammunition” in an attempt to reduce gun violence.
House Bill 2238 was recently presented by 15 state Democrats, who cited the harm that gun violence poses to public health and security across the state. The legislation was sent on Tuesday to the state’s legislature’s committee on finance.
Should the law be approved, the retail sale of ammunition would be subject to sales and use tax.
“A use tax is imposed on all individuals in this state for the advantage of using ammunition as a customer at the rate of percent of the market price,” the bill reads.
